| Gasteria is a medium sized genus with about 25 species of attractive leaf succulents ideal for container plants. With their ability to grow under lower light conditions they are easily grown and maintained in cultivation. Some of the species include varieties, while very attractive cultivars and hybrids add to the array of plant shapes, sizes, textures and colours. The plants produce inflorescences with attractive little hanging flowers. Each flower has a significant basal swelling and varies in colour from whitish pink to orangey red and in most cases usually with green tips. This genus is endemic to the region including South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland. Many cultivars and hybrids have been added by breeding with Gasteria. Several intergeneric hybrids are also known, although sadly, almost always sterile and can not reproduced from seed. Some of the wll known ones include crosses with Aloe, known as “Gasteraloe, Astroloba, Known as “Gastroloba” and Haworthia, known as “Gasterworthia”. |
