Euphorbiaceae

Euphorbiaceae is a very large family with about 326 genera and about 7700 species with a cosmopolitain distribution, the plants may be annual or long lived and range from succulents, herbaceous perenials, creepers and trees. In South Africa three succulent genera (Euphorbia, Monadenium and Synadenium) are represented with about 300 species that are found throughout all nine provinces of South Africa, occupying a wide range of habitats. The plants are usually stem or leaf succulents, and in many cases have swollen tuberous roots that are grown as caudiciform plants. The plants may have leaves or not and are often armed with spines and thorns. The succulent species of the family has adapted a wide range of plant shapes ranging from globose, “medusoid”, columnar and cylindrical stems some forming shrubs or large trees.
Distinguishing characteristics is the floral structures that are called a cyathium and comprises of one to many flowers within a cyathium that is contained within an involucre usually with coloured glands. The fruits are usually 3 valved, exploding when ripe. The Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a well-known world wide horticultural subject that is sold as an indoor plant for its beautiful bracts. Most species makes good garden subjects and others are best grown in containers.
